Connecticut High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Oct. 7 - On3

The Connecticut high school football season is mixed with the public school play of the CIAC and private schools primarily competes out of the Founders League, with plenty of results already giving folks a clearer picture of the 2025 campaign thus far.

Back and forth we go when it comes to who’s the No. 1 team in this week’s Top 25 rankings out of the Constitution State as Avon Old Farms claims the top spot, with St. Thomas More and New Canaan following at 2-3, respectively. Which other teams from around Connecticut high school football deserves to be in the discussion?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Connecticut high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Oct. 7.

1. Avon Old Farms Beavers

Avon Old Farms (4-0) opened up the Connecticut high school football season by avenging a loss to Brunswick School from last season and have set the tone for the rest of the campaign. The Beavers have a talented offense that’s averaging 34.7 points per game, led by quarterback Matthew Baer, running back Kharon Craig, and offensive tackle Charlie Thom (Notre Dame commitment).

The Beavers return to action on Saturday against The Hotchkiss School (1-3).

2. St. Thomas More Chancellors

St. Thomas More (1-0) are back as Connecticut high school football’s No. 1 team after opening the 2025 season in dominating fashion when they rolled to a 27-0 victory over Wyoming Seminary Upper School a few weeks ago.

The Chancellors only losses from the 2024 season came against Maryland’s St. Frances Academy, New Jersey’s Hun School, and Florida’s IMG Academy. St. Thomas More will have a rematch against St. Frances on Friday night, which is the next time they will take the field.

Among the players the Chancellors feature on their roster are four-star edge rusher Alhassan Iddrissu (UCF), cornerback Terron Johnson, running back Malichi Greaves, and linebacker Christian King.

3. New Canaan Rams

The defending Class L state champion Rams (4-0) haven’t looked too much different than they did a season ago as they’ve rolled to three dominating wins over Newtown, Ridgefield, Bunnell and St Joseph, respectively. Most recent win was a narrow 7-3 victory over the Cadets last week.

New Canaan has used a high-powered offense to cruise past the first few of opponents so far, with quarterback Maddox Hoffman throwing for 620 yards and five touchdowns this fall. The Rams take aim at going 5-0 when they take on Danbury at home this Friday.

4. Staples Wreckers

Making their way to the Top 5 in this week’s Connecticut high school football rankings is the Staples Wreckers as they are undefeated at 4-0 after defeating No. 10 Darien (3-1), 31-6.

Leading the way offensively for the Wreckers is the play of senior signal caller Nick Weil, who has completed 48 of 80 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns. On the ground, senior Chaz Darby has rushed for 349 yards and two scores this fall.

The Wreckers have their toughest test of the season this Friday night when they take on No. 10 Wilton (4-0).

5. Daniel Hand Tigers

It’s time to believe that Daniel Hand can compete with many of the best Connecticut high school football teams on a week-to-week basis. The Tigers continued to shine in last week’s 32-7 win over winless Hamden and have proven they’re going nowhere under the tutelage of head coach Erik Becker.

Daniel Hand has received some strong play from their offense, led by senior quarterback Bobby Reh, who has thrown for 860 yards and seven touchdowns. The Tigers aim to remain undefeated when they take on Cheshire (3-2) at home Friday night.
